Etymology
Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity produces a feeling of self-worth and respect, however, there is no financial gain. It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue.´´the verb volunteer was first recorded in 1755 from the noun, in C.1600, "one who offers himself for military service," by M.Fr. Voluntaries. In the non-military sense, the word was first recorded during the 1630s. The word volunteering has more recent usage—still predominantly military—coinciding with the word community service. ``.
Philanthropists
´´Philanthropy etymologically means "love of humanity" in the sense of caring for, developing, and enhancing "what it is to be human" on both the benefactors.``
This world have a lot of people who doesn´t care for each other but many have and really did something to change other people´s life, like Oprah Winfrey, Joan Beverly Kroc and Walter Hubert Annenberg are a few of them.
Joan Beverly Kroc (August 27, 1928 – October 12, 2003)
Beverly Kroc was the third wife of McDonald's Ray Kroc and a philanthropist.Kroc's first philanthropic action was Operation Cork in 1976 in La Jolla. she inform doctors and other health workers about the dangers of alcoholism.In 2002, Kroc saved a large Salvation Army community center that she helped fund to the tune of $87 million, opened to the public. She later, donate an additional $1.6 billion to open Salvation Army Kroc Centers across the nation, the largest one-time gift ever recorded. Several institutions in the San Diego area were named in her name.
Walter Hubert Annenberg (March 13, 1908 – October 1, 2002)
Walter Hubert Annenberg was a US publisher, philanthropist, and diplomat. While an active businessman, Annenberg had an interest in public service. In 1953, he became one of the founding trustees of Eisenhower Fellowships. During his lifetime, it is estimated that Annenberg donated over US$2 billion for education, many school buildings, libraries, theaters, hospitals, and museums across the United States now carry his name. Annenberg was named broadcast pioneers of Philadelphia's person of the year in 1983 and was inducted into the broadcast pioneers of Philadelphia´s hall of fame in 1992.
